Make sure you allow plenty of time to get there- being late, even if as a result of a late bus, is not a good start, so plan your route/timing;
Make sure you have appropriate clothing;
Remember to allow time to prepare some lunch if required.
REMEMBER WHEN YOU LEAVE TO THANK THEM VERY POLITELY WITH YOUR BEST WISHES- THEY WILL SOON BE WRITING A REPORT ON YOU
On the day:
Be punctual and smart/smart casual (as indicated in logbook)
Be polite
As quickly as possible find out about health and safety
Who is a registered first aider
Where is the first aid box
Where is the nearest fire exit
Where is the nearest fire extinguisher - see safety booklet for types and when to use them.
Where is the correct muster point for meeting in the event of an evacuation
Show initiative - if you appeared disinterested you are unlikely to be trusted with challenging jobs - there are many examples of our students being asked to help prepare Government reports or cruising around hospitals with busy consultants.
If on the other hand you are given menial tasks such as repeatedly making cups of coffee, ask to phone the School as this is definately unacceptable and we will either move you or remind the companies of the true purpose of Work Experience.
Do not expect to leave at 4pm. You are not at School and most employers will expect you to stay until about 5pm
If in doubt about the safety of a particular job, don't hesitate - students have occasionally been asked to do really stupid things- such as going down a basement with a torch to find some legal records - this is not safe.
